Savelli: a treasure trove nestled in the Sila plateau
Savelli, a small town in the province of Crotone, lies nestled in the heart of the Sila plateau, surrounded by a dominating natural setting. It's a village seemingly nestled among pine and beech forests, enveloped in a mountain atmosphere that instantly conveys a sense of tranquility. The altitude, fresh air, and clear light give the town a unique, almost suspended character, where daily life follows a slow, profound rhythm. Savelli is one of those places where the breath of nature is so present that it becomes part of its identity.
Savelli's history is relatively recent compared to many Calabrian villages, but no less fascinating. The town was founded in the 17th century by the feudal lords of the time, in a mountainous area that until then had been used primarily as pasture and woodland. The name recalls the Savelli family, who contributed to the founding of the town. Since then, the village has developed into a community tied to the mountains, sheep farming, timber, and other activities typical of Sila villages.
Over time, Savelli has maintained its identity, adapting to change without losing its strong connection to the Sila Mountains, which surround and define it.
Nature and Landscape
The landscape around Savelli is a natural spectacle that changes with each season. In spring, the woods burst with life; in summer, the greenery is lush and enveloping; in autumn, the leaves paint the landscape in warm, bright hues; while in winter, the town is often blanketed in snow, transforming into a small Alpine village in the heart of Calabria.
The Sila plateau offers seemingly endless panoramas: expanses of trees, tranquil clearings, lakes, streams, and vast skies. Walking in the surrounding area means immersing yourself in a pristine natural environment, where human presence seems to respect that of the forest. Savelli is also an excellent starting point for exploring the trails, wooded areas, and quiet spots that make the Sila Mountains one of the most precious green lungs of Southern Italy.
Savelli's historic center is simple and intimate, with houses built according to mountain tradition and streets that wind gently up and down. The main church represents the spiritual heart of the town, while the small squares and panoramic views tell the story of the daily life of a community that has always lived in symbiosis with the mountains.
A distinctive feature of the area is the Lilio Astronomical Park, named after Luigi Lilio, the illustrious Calabrian scientist who devised the Gregorian calendar reform. The park is a fascinating place that unites science, nature, and the night sky, offering a unique experience under one of the brightest and clearest skies in Calabria.
Gastronomy and Traditions
Savelli's cuisine is typical of the Sila: robust, authentic, and deeply rooted in mountain produce. Porcini mushrooms, chestnuts, Sila potatoes, meats, and cheeses are the protagonists of simple yet flavorful dishes. Homemade pasta, bread baked in wood-fired ovens, and holiday desserts round out a gastronomic heritage that preserves rural tradition intact.
Religious holidays, popular events, and seasonal celebrations are moments of great participation, when the village comes alive with colors, sounds, and scents that recall its history and its relationship with nature.
