These caves constitute a complex rock system carved into chalk and sandstone, spread across multiple levels of the hill in the Sperone area. The complex features natural cavities and man-made environments, used in the medieval and Byzantine periods as shelters, agricultural storage areas, and cave settlements. The site combines geological, naturalistic, and historical-settlement interest.
Interesting Facts
The Grava di Grubbo is one of the longest chalk caves in the Calabria region, with over 5 km of explored cavities.
Ancient toponymy: Some caves were once known by names related to agricultural functions, such as "caves of provisions" or "caves of household goods," because they were used as seasonal storage by farmers.
Seasonal groundwater: During certain periods of the year, the water forms small internal lakes, visible in the deepest areas of the Grava di Grubbo; they were once used as a nature reserve for agricultural use.

Free access to the surface caves; visits to the deeper caves are only possible with a local speleologist.
