Acerenthia
Acerenthia
Ancient Acerenthia, now known as Cerenzia Vecchia, represents one of the most evocative and mysterious relics of the Crotone Presila. Perched on a limestone cliff overlooking the Lese River valley, it was for centuries a religious, political, and strategic center of great importance.
Today, the ruins of the medieval village evoke an atmosphere suspended between history and legend, making Acerenthia an unmissable stop for those wishing to discover the most ancient origins of this area.
Interesting Facts
According to legend, Acerenthia was founded by Philoctetes, a hero of the Trojan War, after his landing in Calabria.
The village of Acerenthia is considered one of the most evocative ghost towns in Calabria, often used as a location for photographs, documentaries, and themed guided tours.
The village's central sinkhole, a large natural chasm, contributed over time to water and stability problems, which were among the main causes of its abandonment.
Every November 9th, Cerenzia celebrates the feast of San Teodoro, commemorating the saint's miracle against the dragon, a symbol of the victory of good over evil.
