Between stone and sea: from Santa Severina to the Ionian coast and Sila
Perched on a cliff and suspended between landscape and history, Santa Severina is the ideal starting point for discovering two Calabrias in a single journey: the hinterland of villages and hills, and the luminous, Mediterranean Ionian coast. This guide offers a simple and pleasant itinerary, designed for those who enjoy a leisurely journey: one "highlight" stop per day, plus free time for spontaneous stops.
Day 1 — Santa Severina, the slow visit
Start the day by entering the village at your leisure. We recommend exploring on foot and letting the historic center guide you: narrow streets, small squares, and panoramic views. Santa Severina is best explored slowly, stopping frequently to gaze over the rooftops toward the valley.
At midday, treat yourself to a break in a trattoria: here, the cuisine is authentic and seasonal. Ask for the specials of the day and let the local flavors tell you about the region.
In the afternoon, dedicate yourself to the most monumental and scenic part of the village: the castle, the historic area, and the panoramic viewpoints. End the day with a sunset stroll: the stone changes color, the view opens up, and Santa Severina becomes even more evocative.
Don't miss: an evening stroll through the illuminated streets and scenic overlooks.
Day 2 — Ionian Coast: Capo Colonna and Crotone
The second day is dedicated to the sea and the horizon. Head down the coast toward Capo Colonna, one of the most evocative spots in the area: intense light, wind, silence, and a panorama that makes you want to stay a few minutes longer.
Then continue toward Crotone, perfect for a lunch break and a stroll. The seafront is ideal for breathing in the sea air, while the center offers a change of atmosphere from the village: more bustle, more city life, but always with a relaxed tone. If you're there in season, take some time for the beach or a coffee with a view.
Return to Santa Severina in the evening, rediscovering the calm of the hinterland after a day on the coast.
Practical tip: Bring sunglasses and a light jacket: the wind can be strong at Capo Colonna even in good weather.
Day 3 (optional) — Sila or hills: choose your Calabria
If you have an extra day, choose based on what you're looking for.
Option A: Sila (nature and relaxation) —
Perfect if you want woods, fresh air, and expansive landscapes. The idea is simple: an easy walk, a few scenic stops, lunch at a farmhouse, and return in the afternoon.
Option B: Hinterland and flavors (scenic roads) —
Stay in the hills: small villages, countryside, olive groves, and photo opportunities along the way. This is the slowest option, ideal if you want to experience the area without a timetable, perhaps with a stop to buy local products.
Tip: You don't need to "do much" on this day: just choose a direction and enjoy the ride.
