Bocchigliero: an ancient village in the heart of the Sila Greca
Bocchigliero is a charming municipality in the province of Cosenza, located in the eastern part of the Sila Greca plateau, at approximately 870 meters above sea level. Nestled in a stunning natural setting, the town is surrounded by dense forests, deep valleys, and views that span from the Ionian Sea to the Sila peaks.
Bocchigliero's origins are very ancient: the area was inhabited since the Brettian era and subsequently since the Roman era. The medieval village, which developed around the fortified structure and access roads, still retains the typical urban layout of hilltop villages, with narrow alleys, arches, stairways, and stone houses.
The history of Bocchigliero is also linked to the presence of the Basilian monks, who influenced the culture, traditions, and religious architecture of the area.
Nature and landscapes
The municipality is located in the Sila Greca natural area and offers chestnut, pine, and oak forests, nature trails perfect for trekking and hiking, breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea, and proximity to protected areas, waterways, and scenic spots such as Timpa dell'Aquila, the Ortiano River Gorges, and sections of the Sila National Park.
It is an ideal place for those who love nature, tranquility, and clean air.
The historic center maintains an authentic and charming character, perfect for leisurely strolls through the narrow streets. Among the main cultural sites are:
- The Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, the village's main religious building
- The Church of San Rocco, a place of particular popular devotion
- Remains and traces of the Basilian tradition
- Rural architecture typical of mountainous Calabria
Traditions and gastronomy
Bocchigliero's cuisine reflects Sila and Calabrian traditions: dishes based on porcini mushrooms, widespread in the area, lagane and chickpeas, local cured meats and cheeses, ancient recipes linked to pastoralism, and traditional desserts prepared for festivals.
Religious and folkloristic celebrations are also deeply felt, including patron saint festivals and summer traditions.
Bocchigliero is a place where history, nature, and traditions coexist in harmony. The tranquil atmosphere, the friendliness of the community, and the beauty of the landscape make it a village to be discovered slowly, ideal for those who love the authenticity of less touristy places rich in identity.
