Il Parco Archeologico di Castiglione
Il Parco Archeologico di Castiglione
The Castiglione di Paludi Park extends over 40 hectares and represents an essential stop for understanding ancient Calabria: here, archaic cultures, classical-era fortifications, and the intertwining of man and nature meet. Its chronological depth (from the Oenotrians to the Brettii) combined with its perfect location between the hills and the sea, make the site a bridge between past and present, between landscape and history.
Interesting Facts
The site occupies a hill about 8 km from the Ionian Sea, in a strategic position between the coast and the hinterland, making it a significant example of a defensive garrison in ancient times.
Within the park are imposing square masonry walls, a monumental entrance gate, towers, and the remains of intersecting urban streets—evidence of the classical urban planning culture applied in Calabria.
The oldest traces of the site date back to the Iron Age (Enotrian population), while the most visible phase is that of the 4th-3rd century BC, probably linked to the Brettii population.
