Il castello di Mandatoriccio
Il castello di Mandatoriccio
The imposing feudal castle of Mandatoriccio is located in the highest part of the old village, in the historic center, constituting its main core. Its construction is likely dated to the Aragonese period between the mid-15th and early 16th centuries, although some of the events that have marked the castle's history over the centuries remain dubious and contradictory.
Today, the castle is still visible, although some parts have not been fully restored. Access to all internal areas is not always free, and its condition requires careful conservation. The site nevertheless constitutes an important element of identity for the village of Mandatoriccio and is worth a visit for those interested in medieval history, military architecture, and the Ionian-Silane landscape.
Interesting Facts
The name of the village itself derives from Teodoro Mandatoriccio, Duke of Crosia, who founded the town.
Some historians note that the castle's location was "behind the walls", in local dialect, "arrere 'e mura", a testament to the ancient walls that surrounded the defensive hub.
The building is often mentioned in local tourist guides as the symbol of the village, although, like other Calabrian castles, it suffers from incomplete restoration work.
